Feb 10 'Developing Instincts' Lesson Schedule

What a difference a week makes!!  The temps are going to close to 30 degrees warmer and the best part, NO SNOW!!  Although it may be a little chilly Sun morning; it definitely is going to be better than last weekend.

I had several people decided to have me come their farm rather than trailer to His Way Farm and it's actually a good thing because I had more people decide they wanted to join in so this way I was able to accommodate everyone who wanted to ride.  The only problem was that I had a few people who had time constraints and others that were hauling together and it made scheduling rather challenging.  I'm afraid that it is going to make a rather early morning for some of you who have a distance to travel.  I apologize but I did the best I could do and just think of it as practice for the upcoming event season ;)

Since some of you have not been to VanScoy's before I have made a Google map to help you find your way to the farm.  Click here to view the map before you plug the address into your GPS.  If not, you may find yourself on Teegarden Rd which has a fairly significant hill with S turns which aren't ideal for horse trailers.  If you're driving a car you'll be just fine.

Keep in mind that the drive is 1/4 mile long and is ONE WAY.  There is room to pass at the curve in the drive. But please use caution.  Also, although there is a fair amount of room in the parking lot, please park behind trailers that are already there beginning at the indoor and working your way out.  That way trailers can pull out and there will be plenty of room for the next group of trailers to come in.

You are free to watch lessons from the lounge but please be sure to remove your footwear.  There will be hot chocolate & cider available in the lounge. If you need to use a rest room and don't want to be bothered taking off your boots; go into the barn on the parking lot side & go through 2 sets of gray swinging doors & you will find a rest room on the back left corner of the tack room.  Horses will enter the arena from the far end of the parking lot.

Be sure to scroll down for the schedule and a map of the farm to make it a little easier to find your way around once you arrive.  Also please download the USPC release form, sign it (if you were not here last time) and bring it with you AND if you are paying by check please make checks payable to the Bath Pony Club.  Here's the link for the form.

Feb. 2 ~ Developing Instincts Over Fences Lesson

Wow, I can't believe the response we have gotten to this Winter Lesson Series.  We are now starting an hour earlier and going a little later.  I better stock up on throat lozenges and make sure there are fresh batteries in the wireless mike. I'm looking forward to a fun day as we have a full Lucinda Green sort of exercises set up with the exception of the liverpool  ... we don't want to get behind schedule ;) I have had a couple of cancellations due to weather concerns and they will show on the schedule with a slash  through their name.  At this time I have not tweaked the schedule so if you decide you want to come just let me know. If I end up with more cancellations before Sat I may tweak the schedule and give you a call if your time should change.

Winter Lesson Series @ 'His Way Farm'

I'm really excited to be able to offer lessons through the winter near home (6.5miles) for the first time in the 26 years that I have lived at Stone Gate Farm. Beginning on Sat Jan 19th and for the next 1st & 3rd Saturdays through March I will be giving lessons at 'His Way Farm' which is being sponsored by the Bath Pony Club. For those who may not familiar with me and my background you can check out a brief bio here.  'His Way Farm' is a lovely new facility generously made available by the VanScoy family.

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to ride at 'His Way Farm' yet; I would like to share some links with you that will show you the facility, a Google map and a clinic report from an earlier clinic with pics and video. As you can see from the pictures the arena is huge and the lounge very comfy.  This is a wonderful opportunity to get help with honing your skills over the winter months so you'll be ready to go when the competition season arrives.  Even if you don't have any competitive goals; it's still a great opportunity to get out of the house and spend some quality time with your horse and hang out with your horsey friends and perhaps even make some new ones.

This lesson series will have different subjects each lesson. Participants do not have to attend all the sessions but they will be progressive in nature. Since most of people don't have access to an arena of this size all the lessons (with the exception of March 16th) will be jumping with a fair amount of flat work as it pertains to jumping will be addressed during the warm up.  Riders will be grouped together based on the level of the rider and the horse.  The cost of the lessons is $35 each and $20 for the Dressage Lecture / Demo. Groups will be limited to 3 or 4 riders which will limits us to approximately 20 riders / day.

Spots will be assigned on a 'first come' basis and you must use the on-line registration form  All registrations must be received by the Wed before the lesson for scheduling purposes.  Late entries may be accepted if there is an appropriate spot available.

Jan 19th: Gymnastics - there will be 3 different gymnastics set up with something for every rider and every horse no matter the level to help both rider and horse improve their jumping skills.

Feb 2nd: Developing Instincts of both the horse and rider - aka survival skills:  this lesson will be similar to the first day at a Lucinda Green Clinic where a variety of unusual questions will be set up such as narrow faced fences, points, corners, interesting angles and distances where the rider will learn to ride the horse with the correct rhythm, energy, line and balance so the horse can figure out the answer to these questions.  These skills are necessary for riding cross country courses successfully and safely. Even those riders who will never ride a cross country course, these exercises will help to develop the partnership between the horse and rider.

Feb 16th: Course Work - riders will practice developing the 'quality' canter required to jump a course smoothly throughout. Both straight line bending lines practiced before putting it all together in courses.  The courses will vary depending on the level of the horse and the rider.

March 2nd - Combination Lesson - this lesson will contain elements of the first three lessons with a bit of gymnastics, tricky fences and lines and course work

March 16th - Dressage Lessons - a limited amount of 45min semi private dressage lessons will be available before and / or after the Dressage Demystified Lecture / Demo.  Click here to register.

We hope to be able to address all the above questions and more. Jackie Smith will start off lecture with a Power Point presentation to be followed by demonstrations in the arena with demo riders led by Sue Hines.  Jackie is licensed dressage and eventing judge, rider through the ** level in eventing and 3^rd level in dressage and trainer of horses and riders at the above levels in Eventing.  In addition she is an USEA ICP Level 2 Certified Instructor. Sue has trained multiple horses up through the levels in Eventing which includes a 2^nd place finish in an Advanced horse trials division at Rolex, trained horses through 3^rd level has taught students of all levels.  Sue is an USEA ICP Level 3 Instructor.

Pre-registration is not required but it is encouraged so we can plan accordingly

Eric Dierks Clinic - March 23 - 24, 2013

We are happy to announce that Eric will be coming to Stone Gate Farm on March 23 - 24 just in time to get you and your horse ready for the early events.  If you have not ridden with Eric before be sure to check out the  clinic report from last spring.

Eric is known for his enthusiasm for teaching and training horses and riders.  As an ICP Level 3 instructor and Advanced Level competitor he has a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to share.  For more information on Eric go to www.ericdierks.com  Participants will emerge from this clinic with improved skills and renewed confidence.

Riders and horses will be grouped together by level.  The first day will be show jumping. The second day will be devoted to cross-country schooling, using existing cross-country fences and taking stadium jumps out to create interesting and challenging combinations. If the weather isn’t good, the clinic will be moved to a local indoor..

Auditing is free to members of Area 8 Young Rider and Adult Rider Programs, NEOMTA Members and all members of Pony Club however we request you bring something to share for lunch.  Registration fee is $220 for the weekend.  Stabling is available at $25/night.
